Barcelona - Embracing the Vision of a Greener Future
2014 Barcelona
The film Barcelona - Embracing the Vision of a Greener Future, introduces Barcelona as one of the European cities aligned with the URBES project.

With 1.62 million inhabitants, Barcelona is one of the most densely populated cities in Europe. Located between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountain range of Collserola, the city has urbanised virtually all available land after various periods of urban expansion. This has led to conflicting pressures over green space.

This film presents some of the ways in which Barcelona has tackled problems resulting from urban expansion such air pollution and rising temperatures, and shows how a strong ambition to protect urban green space and its functions have contributed to human health, well-being and the quality of life for urban citizens.

The adoption of the ambitious Barcelona Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity Plan, the creation of an urban garden network and the establishment of the natural park Collserola demonstrate the value of placing nature at the heart of urban planning and embracing the vision of a greener future.

If current trends continue, 70% of the world's population will live in urban areas by 2050 and cities will have a major role in shaping a sustainable future. Nature-based and innovative solutions are essential to cope with the current and future needs of people living in cities.

The URBES - Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Servicesproject, of which IUCN is a member, aims to bridge the knowledge gap on the links between urbanization, ecosystem services and biodiversity. It develops ideas, tools and knowledge for a sustainable urban life, which are co-created and shared throughout European cities.

This project is funded as part of the EU’s 7th Framework Programme for Research by BiodivERsA, which is a network of 21 research-funding agencies across 15 European countries promoting pan-European research that generates new knowledge for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity
