International Forum on Urban Forestry in Mediterranean cities

Valladolid will host next June the First International Forum on Urban Forestry in Mediterranean cities: Innovation, monitoring, social participation and cooperation, which will coincide with a meeting of the Green Southern European Cities Group (GSEC Group).

Both, the Forum and the GSEC, are two initiatives within the project LIFE+ Quick Urban Forestation (Life+ QUF) which promotes the regeneration and reforestation of industrial areas degraded in southern Europe cities by drawing upon the results obtained in the research plots located in Valladolid.

This international forum, to be held at the Science Museum of Valladolid capital on 22 and 23 June, aims to be a meeting-point for researchers, urban managers and technicians to discuss recent advances in the field of efficiency on planting techniques for degraded urban areas and Mediterranean climate. It is also a forum for sharing knowledge about technical projects, policy initiatives and social participation around urban forests. There is a specific session dedicated to the emerging trend of monitoring and intelligent data analysis, to understand the state of the art in sensor technology, Big Data and Internet of things and their applications to urban forestry.

All details of the meeting (objectives, program, fees, registration procedures...) are available on the project website, including information about other activities promoted by the project Life+ QUF (dissemination events with schools, attending conferences and sectoral meetings, progress and test results, etc.).

The partners of Life+ Quick Urban Forestation project are Cesefor, iClaves and SDL, and has the support of the City of Valladolid. The project is financed by the European Union though the Life+ Program initiative. Different techniques to recover degraded industrial areas are being tested in experimental plots located on the outskirts of the city of Valladolid, focusing on the use of techniques to increase the survival rate and the speed of growth of seedlings by improving moisture and soil conditions. The results are collected and analyzed in order to provide useful insights to other cities so they can replicate the model in other urban areas with similar characteristics.
